History of the Schools
Shepperton Green School
A temporary school was put up on in Sheepwalk Lane in 1904 and the new Shepperton Green School was opened in 1906. It closed in 1987 and was demolished and the Pool End Close development was built.
I contacted Surrey County Councils History Department, which holds all the archives, with regards any information or photographs of the School they might hold, they kindly sent this response:
"A search has been made in our online collections catalogue for any records relating to Shepperton Green School but unfortunately without success.
We do hold records for many of the schools in the county but survival is patchy and as there is no legislation to preserve school records, there are some schools for which we have no records at all. Often we can advise people to contact the school directly but obviously this is not possible in the case of schools that have closed.
I have also searched for images of the school in local history publications such as Sunbury and Shepperton Then and Now (1991) and Sunbury and Shepperton Past and Present (2001) both collections of photographs of the local area published by the Sunbury and Shepperton Local History Society, but again without success. Only Shepperton Story (Sunbury and Shepperton Local History Society, 1988) by Valerie Brooking had a reference to the school but there is no accompanying picture."
Saxon School
The local authority thought it would be a great idea if local residents chose the name of the new School. They issued a survey with three possible names of local people for the School to be named after so local residence could decide what the School could be named, they were:
1 - Mr. Goddard (after the Councillor).
2 - Mr. Frank Cassidy (after the regional Education officer for South west Middlesex at that time).
3 - ??? (Can anyone please help with these two missing names?).
Saxon ArtefactsIt looked like the Councillor's name would be chosen, but during the construction of the school remains of a Saxon settlement were discovered, so it was agreed to name the new School Saxon County Junior School.I am currently trying to trace the where abouts of the artefacts discovered at the School. I thought they were currently held at the Museum of London, but have recently discovered they were moved possibly to a few locations. I will update as I discover more. After much research I found some of the smaller artefacts were being stored at a museum storage facility in Woking. Since I viewed them, they have been moved to a new storage facility in Oxford. These are just a few of the artefacts discovered in both digs. It appears no one knows the location of the rest, my search continues, I will keep you updated. To view some of the items I was lucky enough to view and allowed to photograph, please.
If you would like to read the 1967 and 1973 excavation report regarding the digs, please. It is a section from the "London & Middlesex Archaeological Society, Vol 30". It has more information about some of the artefacts in the photographic link above.
