Here are a couple of links to great sites that have more photographs and information about the St. Marys Bay site.
Peter Faulkner administers this web site on behalf of the St. Mary in the Marsh Parish Council which is dedicated to St. Marys Bay. It has some great photographs of the camp and surrounding area including what it looks like now. It also has all the history of the camp. It is well worth a visit. Thank you Peter for allowing the link.
Simon Turnill runs a website about the St. Marys Bay area, which includes a great section on the camp, which has not only photographs (including one of original key fobs) but a site plan and history of the site. This is another site which is well worth a visit. Thank you Simon, for allowing the link.
My return visit.
In May 2013 we took our young Grandchildren to Romney Sands Holiday Park. While there we took them on the Romney Sands Railway, well we had to didn’t we? I thought it would be a great idea to get off at the St. Marys Bay Station and have a look around, which we did. The plan was to have a bite to eat then catch the next train onward. As planned we got off the train at St. Marys Bay and tried to find a place to eat or a shop without luck. After a while we asked a Postman where the best place to eat was. He replied "not around here, there is nowhere". He told us there were two shops, a newsagent and a small DIY store, I think he said. So, we went back to the station only to find the next train was about an hours wait as the Train does not always stop there. By this time our Grandchildren were hungry and wanted the toilet (!). I found the postman (really nice man) again and asked about buses etc. He laughed and said a lot of people do exactly what we had done. Get off the train to have a look around to bring back memories to find only houses and no where to eat. He suggested we walk towards the sea front where we would find a bus stop, and catch a bus, which we did.
I am glad we did stop off that day, I did knew the camp had gone before we visited, but thought there would be a little bit more, i.e. café etc. Still it was great to visit and I now have some great memories of St. Marys Bay from the 70's and our re-visit with our Grandchildren in 2013, who loved the railway, and the very loud train whistles I brought them, which seemed to mysteriously disappear very quickly when we returned home.
The photographs below were taken on that day in May 2013.
